Metro PCS’ $40 Unlimited Prepaid Plan

If you’ve been paying attention to the prepaid cell phone market, then you may have noticed that pay as you go plans have been getting cheaper by the day. They are also becoming more attractive as prepaid wireless providers stack on services to existing plans while cutting prices in order to encourage new subscribers.

This is always a very good thing for consumers. You may have also noticed that the economy is on everyone’s mind these days-a fact that has not escaped prepaid companies. MetroPCS is the latest prepaid provider to jump into the price war in the public arena.

Boost Mobile unveiled a limitless prepaid plan earlier this year. The company has widely been a youth oriented cellular service provider, but has shifted over to a more moderate position and is posed to win new business for its parent company, Sprint. Sprint is acting quite bullish on prepaid, which is evident in its recent purchase of prepaid wireless provider Virgin Mobile USA. Clearly, the company likes the potential of prepaid.

Following quickly on its heels was popular prepaid company Tracfone, which released two new prepaid cell phone plans under the name Straight Talk. One is unlimited and the other cheaper one is for 1,00o minutes of talk each month. Both are aggressive plans that have begun to catch on.

MetroPCS, a regional wireless service provider has decided to compete a little bit more aggressively by shaving five dollars off the price of its Unlimited prepaid plans. MetroPCS’ Monthly Unlimited plan costs $40 for limitless voice, texting and Web access.

MetroPCS $45 plan will have the additions of email, navigation, and even social networking apps on top of unlimited voice, data, and text messaging. A third plan from this company-one that has not changed in price-give subscribers unlimited use of a smartphone plan, complete with browsing capabilities and other functionality.

The $40 plan is five bucks less than the Straight Talk Unlimited plan, which shows that MetroPCS means business and wants to gain more prepaid users. It is ready to compete for new business. It is interesting how these prepaid cell phone plans have progressed over the past several months and it will be interesting to see where it leads.

If you’ve read the past few paragraphs, you may be thinking that many of the plans mentioned are cheaper than contract based plans that offer similar or fewer features. This is no mistake. Prepaid companies are not only competing against similar pay as you go wireless companies, they’re competing against everyone. More people are seeing prepaid as a viable option and are actively looking for alternatives to the plans they may have had for years.
